Playa Jaco, Costa Rica
PURA VIDA
Bustling with surf, sun, and action, Playa Jaco is a famous beach town in Costa Rica. Surrounded by lush tropical rainforest, Jaco’s black sand beach is protected by two rocky points on each end. This protection blunts the power of incoming swells, making Jaco a great beginner and intermediate surf spot. Beachgoers will enjoy the incredible sunsets, the palm-tree dotted coast and the flying scarlet macaws.
Location
Located right in the center of the country’s Pacific Coast and a mere hour and a half drive from San Jose, Jaco is within driving distance to all major attractions in the country. As a major location for both national and international tourism, Playa Jaco offers many more conveniences than other beach towns along the Pacific Coast – grocery stores, farmer’s markets, restaurants, bars, gyms, shops, and more all within walking distance.
The Beach
About two miles long, Jaco’s strip of beach is covered with fine black sand. The salty Pacific Ocean is invitingly warm and usually calm enough for casual swimming. On days where the swell is bigger swimmers should watch out for rip-tides. Beachgoers are protected by Jaco’s Guardavidas (lifeguards) who do an excellent job of keeping swimmers and surfers safe.
Early morning is great for a beach walk before the sun gets too hot and afternoons promise incredible sunsets. Jaco is an active town and you’ll find people enjoying the beach in various ways: surfing, horseback riding, running, volleyball, soccer, beach yoga, and more!
